Scam Awareness: Be Cautious of Spoofed Calls Dirigo Federal Credit Union wants to make our members aware of a phone scam that has recently been reported by financial institutions in Maine. Scammers have been posing as credit union and bank employees and contacting individuals in an attempt to obtain personal or account information. In some cases, they are using caller ID spoofing, a technique that can make a call appear to be coming from a legitimate financial institution when it is not. While we want to emphasize that we are sharing this information as a precautionary reminder for our members, scams like these are a good reason to always be cautious when receiving an unexpected call asking for sensitive information. Don’t Trust Caller ID Alone A familiar name or phone number appearing on your screen does not guarantee that the person calling is actually from that organization. If you receive an unexpected or suspicious call: Pause. Don’t provide personal or account information. Hang up. Don’t feel pressured to stay on the line or act immediately. Call back. Contact us directly using a phone number you know and trust, such as the number on this website. Never provide sensitive information such as your PIN, online banking password, verification codes, or Social Security number to an unexpected caller. At Dirigo FCU, protecting our members means helping you stay informed about scams affecting our communities. Remember: A familiar number on your screen doesn’t always mean a familiar caller is on the other end.
